Stars, led by actress Sherri Shepherd, actor Anthony Anderson and musicians Gavin DeGraw and Phil Vassar, came out in force March 21 for the Donald Driver Driven to Achieve Awards that drew a sell-out crowd to honor four local community leaders.

Driver, a former Green Bay Packers wide receiver, teamed with BMO Harris Bank to launch the awards program in 2014 to honor local and national community efforts. Six people were honored at the event and more than $200,000 was donated to various charities by Driver’s foundation. Other major sponsors included MillerCoors and Jockey International.

Country musician Vassar performed with DeGraw during the event, and American Idol winner Kris Allen and Miss America 2015 Kira Kazantsey also made appearances.

The Wisconsin winners were John Cary, executive director of the MACC Fund; Patty Flowers, regional chief executive officer of American Red Cross; Carol Keintz, executive director of Next Door; and Vincent Lyles, president and chief executive officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. Shepherd and Anderson also received awards for their national charity work.

“This is all about people who are making a difference in the community every day,” Driver said. “What this awards program does is shine the light on them. That is what we need to do more of. Let others know what people are doing to make the community a better place to live.”

The many business executives in attendance included John Daniels of Quarles & Brady LLP, Tom Long of MillerCoors, Brad Chapin of BMO Harris Bank, Milwaukee Public Schools superintendent Darienne Driver, John Utz of Associated Bank, Gary Reynolds of GMR Marketing, Thelma Sias of We Energies, Dr. David Margolis of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Jacqueline Hallberg of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin.

Anderson livened up the live auction when he offered two trips for two to Los Angeles to see his hit TV show “Black-ish” and even have a walk-on role in the comedy. The winners for $16,000 each were Long and Reynolds.
