5th Annual Nelson’s Landing Benefit Golf Tournament

June 20th, 2013

JnOne the weekend of June 7th and 8th, the community of Leonardville, Kansas played host to the 5th Annual Nelson’s Landing Benefit Golf Tournament, Poker Run and Auction.

Nelson’s Landing, owned by Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson’s parents, Alan and Kim, is the Leonardville restaurant that has made tradition out of the charitable weekend benefit.

Kick-off to the weekend festivities began Friday with an autograph signing by Nelson, always fan favorite. In past years, fans have traveled from as far as Oregon for a chance to meet the famous wide receiver.

Saturday the four-person scramble golf tournament began at the Leonardville Golf Course, while teams for the poker run departed at noon. The auction later closed out the festivities that night included several popular bids such as Green Bay Packers collectibles, a trip to a Packers home game, gift baskets and more.

This year proceeds from the benefit went to two recipients: Virginia Knopp and Haevyn Delanie Stoddard.

Knopp was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma in the summer of 2005. Despite being relatively symptom and pain free for the past eight years, her tumors have recently spread. She has been receiving chemotherapy since 2010, but her cancer has grown in size. Knopp has now developed congestive heart failure and is fighting for her life.

Stoddard, 10-months-old of Manhattan, KS, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and possible myocarditis in 2012 after living a healthy first four months of her life. After being placed on a ventricular assist device (VAD) to sustain her, she awaited a heart donation. Fortunately Stoddard was given a successful heart transplant in March of 2013, but has a long road to recovery ahead.

Alan and Kim Nelson were very pleased with the turnout for the benefit this past weekend and posted the following message to their website’s homepage:

“Wow!! What an awesome weekend! We had a wonderful turnout and even managed to get everything in before the rain!! Thank you to everybody who was part of the weekend! Remember if you didn’t get the chance to donate or would still like to, you can mail or drop off money at Nelson’s Landing! Please make your checks out to Nelson’s Landing Benefit!”
